WORLD CELIAC DAY
We know something about this disease.
Celiac disease is an intolerance to gluten in foods, which causes digestive symptoms. This intolerance is permanent, lasting throughout life, and occurs in people who are predisposed to the disease.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a mixture of proteins, which is present in wheat flour and other cereals such as rye, barley and oats.
And what are its symptoms?
In young children, the most common symptoms are chronic diarrhea, bloating, vomiting, lack of appetite, irritability and fatigue, weight loss and decreased growth.
In older children and adolescents, there may be no digestive symptoms and the disease may present as iron deficiency anemia, constipation, and short stature.
In adults, the disease can also present with classic digestive symptoms, although the most common symptoms are iron deficiency anemia resistant to treatment, abdominal discomfort, constipation, episodes of diarrhea, bone and joint pain.
Is there a cure?
This disease has no cure, so the risk of developing gluten-free activity remains for life. But if a person with celiac disease follows the treatment correctly, they are a healthy person who eats “differently.”
What is the treatment?
The only treatment is a gluten-free diet, which must be followed for life.
