World Hypertension Day

Día Mundial de la Alimentación

"It is the main risk factor for death worldwide"

Hypertension, in addition to being a disease in itself, is the main risk factor for death worldwide.

According to the first Global Burden of Disease study in Uruguay, high blood pressure is the second risk factor for both sexes with the most years of life lost due to disability, years of life lost due to premature death and years of healthy life lost.

How can we prevent and control hypertension?

  • Consuming less salt and sodium.
  • Avoiding the consumption of tobacco and nicotine in all its forms.
  • Maintaining an optimal weight.
  • Eating fruits and vegetables daily.
  • Avoiding alcohol consumption.
  • Moving, avoiding a sedentary lifestyle and being active.

In Uruguay, daily salt consumption doubles the international recommendation (10 g): this directly affects the blood pressure levels of almost 40% of the population.

The salt we consume comes from the salt shaker, but a large percentage is hidden in already processed foods, such as cheeses, cold cuts, sausages, snacks, cookies, canned foods, instant soups and all ultra-processed foods.

It is important to start preparing food at home, using condiments and aromatic herbs. Another option is to use oils flavoured with garlic, thyme or chives, among other spices.

We must also get used to paying attention to food labels, or the front labeling, which identifies that it exceeds the daily recommendation.
