“Biodiversity”
June 5th

In 1972, June 5 was established as World Environment Day, within the United Nations General Assembly with which the Stockholm Conference, Sweden, was initiated, and it is celebrated every June 5 since 1973.

The motto for 2020 is: “Biodiversity”.

The Biodiversity is a major cause for global environmental concern. Recent catastrophic events such as large-scale forest fires in Brazil, California and Australia, the locust invasion in Africa and the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a number of major environmental challenges. COVID-19 show that Nature is sending us a message.

Human activities have been altering the planet for decades, causing an unprecedented loss of biodiversity. Glacial ice is melting, coral reefs have shrunk by half and large areas of forest have been lost. We are on the brink of mass extinction and if we continue on this path, the loss of biodiversity will have serious consequences for humanity. Food and health systems could collapse.

This year, millions of people are celebrating the event digitally, connected to social networks. Participate too, join the movement #ForNature, #WorldEnvironmentDay.
